Wheatgrass stimulates the activity of human growth factors!

This process appears to facilitate natural healing processes such as hemostasis and hemolysis, wound, soft tissue and fracture healing, inflammation, various skin disorders and immune stimulation/modulation.

Wheatgrass is a good source of vitamins A, C, E, and K, and of vitamin B6, zinc, iron, selenium, and manganese and a great addition to healthy diet. In addtion to that, wheatgrass can assist wound healing and skin recovery.

What Is Wheatgrass?

Wheatgrass is the young grass of the wheat plant. Wheatgrass is a natural source of vitamins and minerals (a few of which are antioxidants) including vitamins A, E, C, K and B6, Calcium, Selenium, Magnesium and Iron. Wheatgrass is widely acknowledged as one of nature’s existing super foods. When grown in organic soil wheatgrass retains 82 out of the 92 minerals that are present in soil and 1oz of wheatgrass juice is said to contain the same amount of nutrients as 2.5 lbs of green vegetables. Wheatgrass reaches its nutritional peak when it reaches around 7 to 8 inches.

In the 1930's an American agricultural chemist, Dr. Charles F Schnabel noted that ailing hens fed fresh, young wheatgrass recovered quickly, grew faster and fertility doubled compared with healthy hens fed standard diets. This discovery was the impetus for what became a lifetime of research into the reason for this amazing result. Joined by others, such as biochemist George Kohler, his passion inspired a body of scientific research that continues today. Other pioneers such as Japanese pharmacist, Dr Yoshihide Hagiwara have proven wheatgrass to be of major therapeutic significance.

It is possible that research chemists have identified all the known biologically active substances in wheatgrass except for the elusive ' Grass Juice Factor' which remains a mystery to this day. Clinical and research evidence has revealed the 'Grass Juice Factor' to have, probably by the stimulation of human growth factors, a powerful effect on the regeneration of damaged skin and the body in general.

The healing effects of wheatgrass are frequently attributed to chlorophyll, but I believe this hypothesis has little or no substance. The wheatgrass extract I use contains a barely detectable amount of chlorophyll, yet has a similar therapeutic profile as observed and recorded in numerous laboratory and clinical studies performed since the 1930's. There are clearly (many) other biologically active factors at work. These posts consist of summaries of research articles relating to wheatgrass and other cereal grasses dating from the 1930's.

The point is that although one can't ignore the nutritional benefits of wheatgrass, I strongly believe that the most important elements in wheatgrass are the small, as yet unidentified biologically active molecules that give you, me and millions of others continuing good health.

12 Benefits of Wheatgrass

According to medical scientists and researchers, wheatgrass stimulates growth factors that are responsible for numerous physiological and immunological processes in humans and animals. Here are some examples:

Improve the immune system

when the immune system is supported, we have a better chance of healing. A 2004 study in the journal of Indian Pediatrics showed that wheatgrass was such a powerful red blood cell booster it was able to reduce the need for transfusions in patients.

Stimulate Circulation

Wheatgrass has the ability to increase the amount of oxygen in the blood, making it a good way to stimulate circulation.

Antioxidant Effects

A study suggests (Phytother. Res. 20, 2006) wheatgrass contains higher antioxidant levels than typical vegetables. Antioxidants reverse the effects of free radicals, which volatile compounds in the body have links to aging and other health issues.

Restores skin thickness

Exfoliates skin by removing dead skin cells. Wheatgrass also Restores skin thickness and facilitates an internal rejuvenating mechanism, enhancing the youthful glow and elasticity of your skin. It is also very effective on healing eczema, psoriasis, topical steroid withdrawal (red skin syndrom) and many other severe skin conditions.

Promote Anti-aging

In addtion to slowing down skin and hair aging, wheatgrass helps delay frailty, muscle atrophy, relative obesity, and increased frequency of fractures.

Antiseptic Properties

Due to its antiseptic properties, wheatgrass is ideal for healing non-healing wounds, ulcers, fissures, bruises, sores, insect bites, rashes, cuts, and scrapes. In the American Journal of Surgery (1940), Benjamin Gruskin, M.D. recommends wheatgrass for is antiseptic benefits to heal wounds, hasten skin grafting, leg ulcers and so on.

Aids Digestion

According to the American Cancer Society, wheatgrass contains certain alkaline minerals that provide relief from ulcers, constipation, and diarrhea. People with IBS (irritable bowel syndrom) often get relief from taking Wheatgrass Supershots and applying Wheatgrass cream topically.

Pain Relief, Anti-Inflammatory

Wheatgrass helps lowering and eliminating general inflammation. Thus, it provides relief from common body aches and pains, i.e. muscle pain, sore and stiff muscle and soft tissue injury.

Blood Builder

Wheatgrass molecules closely resemble that of the hemin molecule, the pigment which combines with protein to form hemoglobin. The major difference is the wheatgrass molecule contains magnesium as it’s central atom, and the hemin molecule contains iron. The molecular structure of these two substances is almost identical in all other respects. Wheatgrass juice has been proven to build red blood cells quickly after ingestion. It normalizes high blood pressure and stimulates healthy tissue cell growth.

Lower Cholesterol

In a 2011 study, Wheatgrass was found to both help lower cholesterol and manage high levels of cholesterol in the body. It was found that it does this by lowering triglyceride levels and ultimately decreases inflammation and lowers oxidative stress.

Enhances fat metabolism to reduce weight

Wheatgrass is like a natural energy drink and it contains selenium, which is crucial for the healthy functioning of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is one of your body’s natural weight management tools. According to a 2013 study in Clinical Endocrinology, adding selenium to your diet can help improve irregular thyroid function, even when linked to other issues such as autoimmune diseases.

Benefits Of Wheatgrass Extract

Dr Wheatgrass' wheatgrass extract is derived from freshly cut, young, vital wheatgrass sprouts. Using a proprietary process that enables almost 100% retention of bioactives results in a stable extract that lasts for many years. The process takes about three months to complete under strictly controlled conditions. As a result, Dr Wheatgrass' wheatgrass extract contains higher antioxidant levels than fresh wheatgrass juice.

Wheatgrass extract is a slightly brown, clear liquid, unlike green fresh wheatgrass juice. It is brown because there is no chlorophyll remaining in the extract. (Instead of "chlorophyll", think "Grass Juice Factor.") Wheatgrass extract does not have the odor and taste of fresh wheatgrass but still retain full biological activity in it. Many people find it difficult to tolerate the odor and taste of fresh wheatgrass juice. Wheatgrass extract is well received by all ages including young children.

Wheatgrass extract is shelf-stable for at least two years at room temperature. Fresh wheatgrass juice only lasts a few days if refrigerated.

In 2006 a group of Indian scientists (Kulkarni et. al.) performed an important study prompted by the knowledge that the search is on for plant products with high antioxidant activities

Antioxidant levels (phenolic and flavonoid compounds) of water-based (i.e. wheatgrass juice) and alcohol-based extractions of wheatgrass were measured from plants grown under different growing conditions over periods from 6 to 15 days. These conditions included tap water, tap water with nutrients, soil and tap water and soil with nutrients. These extracts were compared with a commercially available wheatgrass tablet.

The scientists found antioxidant levels of wheatgrass extract were:

  1. Highest at the end of the growing period (15 days).
  2. Up to 30% higher in alcohol-extracted solutions compared with freshly juiced wheatgrass.
  3. Highest in soil with nutrients.
  4. Higher than many natural extracts and vegetables.
  5. Antioxidant level is significantly lower in the wheatgrass tablet compared with both fresh juice and alcohol-extracted solutions.
